Belize: Rainforest Conservation
Belize has been at the core of our Directors work, working with NGO’s on the front line of rainforest conservation.

We are currently developing funding methods with the University Of Exeter that will support projects, NGO’s and Private Reserves involved in the conservation of significant species such as the Jaguar, Tapir and Scarlet macaw.

In 2020 we started a 2 year, Research and Development project in the Pooks Hill Reserve in Cayo District, utilising acoustic sensors, and the use of Earth observation systems to make the Rangers in the reserve more situationally aware of any threats from illegal actions. We have supported the local Rangers in protecting this stunning and diverse habitat and proved the concepts and operation is scalable and can give significant impact in the battle against illegal deforestation.
A tracking dog and training for an NGO in Belize was deployed and has been operational, working to safeguard rangers and assist in detecting wildlife crime. The dog was donated by a charity partner Animals Saving Animals who sent a team out to train the new handlers.
Since this project and the lessons learned from this, we have been building our capabilities and knowledge in Earth Observation and have strong links with the University of Exeter and other academic institutions such as the University of Leicester space Lab. Who deliver online workshops for our veterans and learners in Earth Observation.
We have learnt a great deal since Belize and working with the University of Exeter we will be developing new funding models to enable Secure Forests to deliver Conservation projects at scale.
